Savant

A Savant composes rather than selects. It has no spell-circle list: each incantation joins a form with one or two elemental words, and the result is resolved from the grammar, the Savant's lore, and Fortune.

Building the character

Insight guides composition and learning. Attunement deepens the magical reserve and helps hold dangerous word-shapes together. Finesse assists bolt forms; Grace and Vigor keep mistakes survivable.

An early Savant needs:

  • Channeling and Mental Attunement;
  • at least one elemental Wordcraft branch deep enough to speak safely;
  • a defensive plan built from Fitness, equipment, and SELOS compositions;
  • Spell Targeting when BOLTAR is a primary attack;
  • breadth into a second element only when the first is dependable.

The four elemental Wordcraft branches are the Savant's living spellbook. They are favored study for this calling and visible through TRAIN.

The grammar

INCANT BOLTAR IGNIS KOBOLD
INCANT VORTHA AERIS
INCANT SELOS PETRIS
INCANT BOLTAR IGNIS AERIS KOBOLD

Forms set the shape:

  • BOLTAR seeks one target;
  • VORTHA spreads through hostile targets in the room;
  • SELOS (SELF) turns the working inward as a ward.

Elements set the force. Fire burns, air shocks, earth staggers, and water freezes. Each domain has lesser, greater, and master words. Two different domains can combine into firestorm, magma, steam, sandstorm, ice, or mud.

The first unrecognized token begins the target name; AT and ON are optional links. A missing form defaults to BOLTAR.

Safe speech and discovery

Lore ranks determine which tier in a domain can be spoken safely. Reaching above that tier is allowed because discovery should involve play, but the working becomes difficult and can backfire. A failed experiment can consume mana, impose recovery, or strike the speaker.

WORDS lists what the character knows. New discoveries are recorded to the character rather than globally unlocking a numbered spell. The system rewards a laboratory habit: recover, isolate variables, and do not test a master word beside an audience you cannot afford to scorch.

Memorized compositions

Savants can name and memorize useful word sequences:

MEMORIZE CINDER BOLTAR IGNIS
CAST CINDER KOBOLD
FORGET CINDER

Scroll study, mentors, and deliberate experimentation expand the vocabulary. Savant scrolls and memories belong to wordcraft; circle wands and catalogued scrolls belong to the other magical tradition. The separation is intentional.

Mana

Wordcraft mana is composed from form, element tiers, and the cost of joining two domains. A lesser bolt is cheap; a master vortex or paired working is expensive. The parser reports the live result, so there is no need to infer a price from a spell number—the Savant has none.

Common mistakes

  • Learning one rank in every element without a dependable safe word.
  • Speaking above the safe tier while wounded or nearly out of mana.
  • Forgetting that Finesse and Spell Targeting matter to bolt forms.
  • Treating a vortex as a free room-clearer; target capacity and mana still matter.
  • Expecting circle items or catalogue training to extend wordcraft.
