How Phoenix Sagas plays

You read the room, type what you want to do, and the world answers in text. Underneath that simple loop is twenty years of MUD tradition and a modern engine's depth.

What is a MUD?

A Multi-User Dungeon: the text-based ancestor of every MMO. No graphics, no download — the world plays out in writing, which means the depth goes into systems instead of shaders. Text is not the limitation here; it is the point. It also means the whole game works with a screen reader, over the thinnest connection, on anything with a keyboard.

Magic you compose, not memorize

Magic is a grammar. You learn words — four elemental domains, three tiers deep — and speak them in incantations the engine resolves live, including combinations nobody ever wrote down. Speak two elements and they fuse. Find one you love, SCRIBE it, name it, make it yours.

> incant boltar ignis kobold A lance of flame seeks the dirty kobold — 28 fire damage! > incant selos petris Stone rises to your word, wrapping you in a gritty ward. > incant vortha ignis aeris Fire and air fuse — a burning cyclone tears through every foe in the room!
Fights you can read

Combat runs on the classic hundred-sided engine — attack against defense, stance and posture, roundtime honestly priced. And the most dangerous creatures fight in tells: a readable windup, seconds to answer, and a verb that turns the blow. Stun a boss mid-windup and the attack breaks entirely. A smart, well-read fighter beats the monster that outweighs them.

The warren chief heaves the great cleaver high overhead, muscles bunching for a killing blow! (React: DODGE — about 6 seconds!) > dodge You throw yourself aside as the cleaver whistles past! The cleaver bites deep into the packed earth where you stood a heartbeat ago.
NPCs that live

The townsfolk are not vending machines. They carry drives, memory, and relationships; they decide what to do next and find their own words for it. Help the herbalist and she remembers. Cross the urchin and he remembers too. News of your deeds travels the taverns without you carrying it.

A game that respects your evening

The Saga

A campaign in chapters that points your session somewhere — and never forces it. Steps note themselves as you play; the next chapter's opening lands the moment one closes; what lies ahead stays ??? until you reach it.

Feats — the permanent record

Firsts and finishes, stamped with the day and never revoked. Some carry titles the herald will let you wear. One — First Flame — belongs only to those who walked the world while it was young.

The weekly ledger

Five bounty writs in a week pays a guild bonus; kept weeks grow a streak. Writs are never limited and nothing ever locks — the week gates only the bonus. That's a promise, in writing, in HELP BOUNTY.

No pay-to-win. No pay-to-anything.

Free to play, no subscription, and we never sell power, gear, or stats. The only currency that matters is the one you earn on the trail.
